websignian builder interview

by creative team in news at 3:59 pm

as a member of the hero support team at websignia, i thought it would be cool to talk to one of the coding brains of websignia, juhong lee. given his incredible talents, he is always in demand. i was fortunate enough to get a minute of his time; unfortunately it was only a minute long. here is the very “elusive” interview that almost never happened.

pa: mr. juhong lee before we begin, may i call you juhong?
jl: no.
pa: how about mr. lee?
jl: no.
pa: please?
jl: no.
pa: but this is a very informal interview. we’re all friends here, right?
jl: no.
pa: is there a reason why you’re being difficult?
jl: maybe
pa: alright, let’s move on…

pa: mr. lee, about 90% of the time you tell our design team that some of the crazy functionalities they come up with won’t work and the other 10% you tell them it’s impossible. yet you’ve built plenty of great websites like newark-alliance.com, socobk.com, and luterrasystems.com. how do you make the impossible, possible?
jl:… lots of coffee.

//cms

pa: there are a few open source cms’s used for websignia projects, which is your favorite cms to use?
jl: wordpress.
pa: why?
jl: because it’s easy and extendible.
pa: why?
jl: because i said so.
pa: what’s your feelings about working with other cms platforms like drupal?
jl: good, but depends on the project.

//advice

pa: what do you think young developers should learn to eventually be as awesome as you are at developing websites, mobile and web apps, custom cms, and other solutions?
jl: everything.
pa: everything?
jl: yes, everything.
pa: what counts as everything? do you mean html, css, javascript, PHP?
jl: that’s not everything but it is a good start. master at least 1 markup, 1 client side and 1 server side program language.
pa: if you had to give any advice to a relatively new web developer, what would you tell them?
jl: learn and adhere to coding standards.
pa: you mean the code has to have readability, maintainability, and consistency for other developers that may also work on the same code later on down the line? by the way, what’s an example of clean code formatting?
jl: proper indentation, naming and logic
pa: indentation? naming? is that really such a big deal?
jl: yes.
pa: cool

//mobile

pa: how hard is it to make a site work in a web and mobile setting?
jl: not hard. html 5 and ajax help.
pa: ajax? cleaning detergent?
jl: not that kind of ajax.
pa: is there anything else you would like to share with me?
jl: no, i have to get back to work.

there you have it folks, mr. juhong lee of websignia giving us this very “elusive” interview.
if you have any other questions, ask us, and we’ll get them answered in between coding sprints.
