the beginning

“what’s that noise?” the grinding noise grew louder as they approached the top of a hill. it sounded like an idling jet turbine. the websignians noticed sparks flying, but couldn’t see the source. at the top of the hill they saw a great valley below that looked like a junkyard. there were cracked motherboards smoldering and glowing in a pit, while piles of code sat in a twisted heap. the websignians noticed the source of the noise: a large fan turning, blowing cool air on a processor that sparked and buzzed as it performed complex calculations.

at first, all they could see were large chunks of code moving by themselves, as if levitating. then they noticed there was a small shadowy figure moving under the code. “there’s someone down there. how’s he doing that?” They watched amazed as this little wizard compiled code into towering, but faceless, data structures and applications. some of the code from the tower came loose, became mobile, and took flight, and some remained static. though all the websignians could see were 1′s and 0′s, it was clear to the websignians that the code was programmed to only do the tiny titan’s bidding.

they slowly approached to get a better look at the source of this miniature muscle. “build!” commanded the voice, seeming too deep for its owner, confused the websignians. they tried to ask what the structures were designed to do, but all the sweaty figure would say was “build.” with nothing to lose, they pointed to one of their designs and said “design.” the tiny titan stopped, moved closer, took the design, and stared intensely. Turning back to point at the towering pile of code, and then pointing at the design, he repeated this three times. after the third time, one of the websignians had an idea. He took out another drawing and mimicked the same actions, as if asking for clarity. this brought a smile to the tiny face, and the websignians knew they’d found another match.
