inspiration of websignia’s design team

by marketing team in thoughts at 12:10 pm

inspiration can come from everywhere and anywhere. sometimes it’s something you see, or something you hear, or even in a dream you had. whatever the source, anything that inspires creativity, is worth sharing. check out what inspires our creative team.

steve jones, creative director

movies & tv – i’m somewhat of a trekkie and am always inspired by sci-fi movies that depict the future as a place where technology and  humanity are friendemies. the movies that have inspired me most are star trek, minority report, and the matrix trilogy.

video games – i’m a life long gamer, so i’m always interested in the way video games have evolved from pure entertainment (centipede and robotron) to addictive gaming experiences (gears of war and call of duty). the evolution of the console gaming experience has influenced the way i have approached designing user experiences, interactivity, and engagement. it’s the layers of subtle detail, the way you move a user on a path towards an end goal, and the challenge of keeping them engaged each step of the way.

other designers - if you’re into cat skinning, then you know that there is always more than one way to get it done. i love to see what other creative minds are doing, how they think, and their creative approach to problem solving. i’ve had the pleasure of working with some really awesome designers, and love to be surprised by an out of the box piece of creative.

dreams – i often daydream and visualize designs and creative concepts. i think about every aspect of the design and by the time i open a photoshop document, the site pretty much designs itself.

life - a walk through any neighborhood in any direction always inspires thought. watching the way people hustle to their destinations, the latest billboard ads, the latest cars and clothing trends, what’s going on in the rest of the world and how it affects the future of people around me. life is amazing if you pay close attention to it.. and think of how to make it better.

deviant art - also affectionally known as “da,” features some of the best unrecognized and professional artistic talent online. artists post everything from their sketches to completed works,  in all different styles and mediums. when I’m looking for an idea or need inspiration, this is one of the first places I check. the tutorials from other artists are also very insightful.

fonts - fonts are fun!  when the font  compliments the design, you’ve got the perfect recipe for a great design. when i’m looking for creative fonts to enhance a design or even inspire one, my favorite place is www.dafont.com.

comic books - i love comic books! they have some of the most stunning graphic artwork i’ve ever seen. often when i need a spark or an idea on how to lay out a sketch, i refer to my growing comic book collection. i’ve been known to read just about anything.

“how to” guides - i’m always willing to learn. to me, knowledge is inspiring! although i’ve never been know to actually follow the directions in “how to” guides, i find that the tips and insights provided often sparks creativity.   i especially enjoy those focusing on web design and adobe products. i sleep with a photoshop CS5 guide under my pillow…seriously, i do.

people - i know, this may sound like i’m a major creeper, but watching normal people do what they do is  incredibly inspiring to me. some of my best ideas and sketches have come from things that I see people do, wear, or say in everyday situations. i simply watch with an open mind and inspiration often comes. there’s a reason i’m never without my sketchbook, i never know who or what may inspire me.

comic books – a highly disregarded art form. i’ve read and studied comics since i was able to read. comics are a unique form of storytelling with a wide array of styles that reflect the world around them. looking through the history of comic books gives me a summary of the history of pop art, society, and an evolution of storytelling techniques.

architecture – i have always loved figuring out how and why things work. buildings are designed, not just for aesthetics, but with a purpose. i like seeing the different angles and the way all the different parts work together. decorative elements such as gargoyles are cool too, now that i think about it, we should use more gargoyles.

museums - museums house a  tremendous collection of classic artwork that i can “feel” in a way that i can’t  when looking at reproductions in books. for me, there is no better way to get inspired than to be in the presence of masterful works of art.

nature – maybe this is cheesy or cliche but not many people stop to appreciate the natural world around them. nature is a chaotic confluence of elements that somehow all come together, like a massive ever changing puzzle. i look at the colors of the horizon, the curves of a river, the spots and stripes on animals, the motion of waves on the shore or the tall reeds in the wind, and I am inspired by it all.

peers - i have always been more creative working around others than sitting in a silo by my self. i feed off the creative energy of other artists and i am driven to grow as at artist and truly stretch the limits of my imagination.
